i am a writer

I am a writer who doesn’t write the way she used to.
Who has grown, changed, altered, and evolved.
I used to write fast, now I write slow.
By hand.
Something that has become very therapeutic for me.

I love the sensation of pen on paper and forcing myself to slow down.
Even when I want to pick up the pace, I tell myself to slow down,
And remind myself that I will get to the words,
But taking the time to get there is part of the journey.

It usually takes my brain a few minutes
To realize that I’m focused on writing,
But when it clicks, I’m in it.

I write mainly by hand, but will type when the situation calls for it.
But longhand allows me to connect with the words on a deeper level.
I’ll use whatever is at my disposal,
And I’m not too picky about my tools.

I write the most focused in the morning,
Before the craziness of the world gets into my head.
But I also write when I can, depending on my schedule.
I will always take time to write.

I’ll usually write with lyric-less music because it’s less distracting.
Sometimes I’ll use lyrics if I really need to capture a specific mood.
And sometimes–like right now–the everyday world is my soundtrack.
The birds chirping,
Cars passing by,
Distant conversations of those outside my window.
This worldly music often brings me to a more connected state.

If I were to guess what I look like when I write, it’s focused.
I always know when I’ve gone into a deep zone because time blurs,
And I temporarily forget where I am.

I stay connected to the world of writing by writing,
But also connecting with writers online and sharing,
Either my own work or someone else’s.

I stay connected by trusting the process,
And allowing the words to flow through me,
However or whenever they want.

I wrote this on September 10, 2024, in response to a prompt. I can’t remember exactly where it came from. A course, maybe, or a newsletter. I do know that it asked me to discuss my writing process, how I stay connected to writing, and what I listen to while writing.

I enjoy a good prompt now and then, as it provides some direction. I don’t use them often, but when I do, it’s because I know I need to get something out of my system. Even if the response doesn’t match the prompt in the end, I feel accomplished because I got the words out.

Do you use writing or journaling prompts? If so, what are some of your favorites?

If this post resonated with you in any way, please consider buying me a coffee. A little caffeine goes a long way for a writer, and I will be forever grateful for the fuel. ☕️
